Vivo X Fold 2: The most powerful foldable phone yet

Vivo has launched the X Fold 2, the first foldable phone to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, the latest and greatest processor from Qualcomm. The X Fold 2 is a successor to the X Fold, which debuted in April 2022 as a China-exclusive model. The new phone boasts several improvements over its predecessor, such as a lighter and thinner design, a larger and faster main display, a bigger battery, and faster charging speeds. It also comes with a triple rear camera setup with Zeiss optics and dual selfie cameras on both screens.

Design and display

The X Fold 2 follows the book-style foldable design, with an 8.03-inch LTPO AMOLED main display that folds in half. The main display has a resolution of 1916 x 2160 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz. It also supports HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and peak brightness of 1800 nits. Vivo claims that it has improved the waterdrop hinge mechanism to make it more durable and smooth.

On the outside, there’s a 6.53-inch AMOLED cover display that also runs at 120Hz and has a resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels. It also supports HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and peak brightness of 1600 nits. Both screens have under-display fingerprint scanners for biometric authentication.

The X Fold 2 weighs 279 grams and measures 161.3 x 143.4 x 6 mm when unfolded and 161.3 x 73.4 x 12.9 mm when folded. It comes in three color options: black, blue, and red.

Performance and battery

The X Fold 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is based on a 4nm process and has an octa-core CPU with a maximum clock speed of 3.2GHz. The chipset also has an Adreno 740 GPU for graphics performance and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, GPS, and sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G networks.

The phone comes with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. There is no microSD card slot for memory expansion.

The X Fold 2 packs a 4800mAh battery that supports both wired and wireless fast charging. The phone can charge at up to 120W via USB-C cable, which can fill up the battery from zero to 100% in just 26 minutes, according to Vivo. It can also charge wirelessly at up to 50W, which can fully charge the battery in 40 minutes. Additionally, it supports reverse wireless charging at up to 10W for charging other devices.

Camera and software

The X Fold 2 has a triple rear camera system that consists of a 50MP main camera with a customised Sony IMX866V sensor, OIS, and Zeiss T* lens coating; a 12MP ultrawide camera with a 108-degree field of view; and a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. The rear cameras can record videos at up to 8K resolution at 30fps or at up to 4K resolution at 60fps with gyro-EIS.

The phone also has two selfie cameras: one on the main display and one on the cover display. Both are 16MP sensors with an f/2.5 aperture and HDR support. They can record videos at up to 1080p resolution at 30fps.

The X Fold 2 runs on Android 13 with Vivo’s OriginOS 3 skin on top. The software offers various features to take advantage of the foldable form factor, such as split-screen mode, multi-window mode, app continuity, floating window mode, and more.

Availability and price

The X Fold 2 is currently available only in China, where it starts from ¥8,999 (around $1,300/£1,050) for the base model with 256GB storage and ¥9,999 (around $1,450/£1,170) for the higher-end model with 512GB storage.

There is no official word on whether the phone will launch globally or not, but you can still buy it on import from online retailers like bludiode.com, which offers free shipping worldwide and various payment options.
